Day 11: Stairway to eleven (Diggs takes the stairs)

Today is Thursday, Day 13.

Diggs spends most of his day sleeping in odd positions. He has 4 more days worth of medications left. I’m interested to see how things change once he is off the meds. He is obviously upset about what has happened to him. I am hoping that he will bounce back soon. I’m very sure that our packing the houses in preparation for our move isn’t helping either. By the end of day Saturday we will be in our new home (without stairs) and things should get back to normal for him.

Speaking of stairs…

Diggs Stairs

Diggs has managed to stumble himself down the stairs well enough but he is showing the most improvement coming back up. It has been really interesting to watch him figure out his new situation. He shows the most improvement whenever food is involved.

This is a blog page dedicated to the story of Diggs, a 78 pound, 11 year old, Shepherd mix who was diagnosed with bone cancer at the beginning of 2018. In March of 2018, I was left with no choice but to take his front left leg to stop the cancer from spreading to the rest of his body. This is the story of Diggs and his transformation into the perfect "Tripawd".

  1. OMD!!! I AM SOOOO IMPRESSED WITH HIS ABILITY TO CLIMB STAIRS!! ๐Ÿ™‚ Inlove that he is so very careful and approaches each step with caution. Very, very smart boy!

Is Diggs “tapering” any of his meds at all at the end of week two? Sometimes dogs still need some reduced form of pain meds going into week tjree. I’m sure you’ll monitor him carefully for any signs of pain.

It was around the three week mark that I was finally able to say I did this FOR my Happy Hannah and not TO her!! Some of jer sparkle started coming back. If I recall, it was the three week mark that she finally got up, tail wagging and woo-wooing to greet me at the door when I came home! ๐Ÿ™‚

Tha js for the update. Diggs is really looking good!

    Hugs
Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

  2. Way to go Diggs! He rocked those stairs like a pro! He might be feeling the excitement of the move, they feed on that stress so maybe that is what you are seeing.
Sally gave you great advise there. Watch him while you adjust his pain meds. More exercise and activity may also need meds tweaked as he gets back to his new normal.
Love that video, Diggs you are a handsome boy!!

  3. Nick,
It’s great to see how well Diggs is doing. Like Sally said some dogs have a little down period but most rebound pretty well.
Something you said caught my eye though. ” He is obviously upset about what has happened to him” dogs live in the moment. He isn’t upset about what happened to him. That is our projection of our emotions onto our dogs. Yes, I do it too.
He is adjusting well and rocked the steps really well. Just remember it is still early in recovery so not to let him over do it

  4. Diggs, it is so cool to hear that you are rockinโ€™ it on the โ€˜Stairway to Eleven!โ€™ Hehe, yup very funny!

Stewie was starting to get back to his New/Old Hoppy self around week three. It sounds like Diggs is doing great! Stewie was still on his Gabapenting into week three.
    Good luck with the move!
